The IWC is the global body charged with the conservation and management of whales. The IWC currently has 88 member governments from countries around the world. The IWC's role has expanded since first established in 1946. In addition to the regulation of whaling, the IWC now works to address a wide range of conservation issues, including bycatch, entanglement, vessel strikes, ocean noise, pollution, debris and sustainable whale watching.
